Encyclopedia of Applied
Ethics: Encyclopedia Prospectus
The study of ethics combines an established canon of published works with new publications, suggesting that while approaches might not change, applications of ethics have grown both in industries, such as media and biomedical, and in intellectual fields, such as law and politics. Books-in-Print, for instance, includes 630 ethics titles, with 38% of these having been published since 1991 and 70% since 1985.
Applied ethics lends itself to an encylopedia format because of these many industries and intellectual fields. The Books-in-Print list records this breadth of applications; the Academic Press Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics has captured and organized it for the first time. The Encyclopedia is based on twelve major subject areas. (Click here to view the list of subject areas.)
Each of the twelve subject areas is divided into discrete topics that are covered by 5,000-6,000 word articles. These articles begin with a definition of the subject and contain illustrative material, glossaries, and bibliographies. Second- and third level headings, boxes, sidebars, and the like emphasize the reference-oriented nature of the material. (Click here for a list of the key features of the encyclopedia.)
The Academic Press Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics consists of four volumes, with all the articles arranged in a single A-to-Z format. (Click here to view a complete list of articles.)
The Encyclopedia has been developed ubder the direction of a distinguished Editorial Board. (Click here to view a list of Board members.) The articles themselves have been written by a group of experts from many different countries, giving the work a truly international perspective.(Click here to view a list of authors.)
While the study of applied ethics cannot tell us what to do, it can help us make our own ideas clearer, more rational, and more responsive to the realities of life. It helps us think critically about our values and to decide whether we need to develop better ones. The Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics should immediately find a large and interested readership.
The following list presents the twelve general subject areas for the Encyclopedia of Applied Ethics.
