A. W. Tozer (1955) The root of the righteous

Like a strong and healthy tree, it must have a strong and sound root in order to withstand almost any weather and flourish with fruits.  So as a Christian; if he merely concern with his appearances, performances and results, but neglect to grow strong in the root of the righteous, his spiritual life will soon be dried up and die.

What are the causes to slow or retarded growth in the root of the righteous?

Some of the causes include:

·         Failure to give time to the cultivation of the knowledge of God

·         A low or unworthy conception of God that God is not easy to live with

·         Listen to no man who fails to listen to God

·         Treating the Lord as the Christ of utility

·         Inability to receive admonition

·         Spiritual contentment

Peter Thau-Fong Wu  吳彼得 (2000): The bet on Eternity 人生最大的賭注  從懷疑到信仰

Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent. (John 17:3)

If God really exists, how to distinguish which is the one and only real God ?

[1] For you are great and do marvellous deeds; you alone are God. (Ps 86:10) [2] For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. (Ro 1:20) [3] For with you is the fountain of life; in your light we see light. (Ps 36:9) [4] The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not lives in temples built by hands. (Ac 17:24) [5] But God demonstrates his love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Ro 5:8)

Kim Wier & Pam McCune (2004): Redeeming Halloween: Celebrating without selling out

Today, Halloween has become a pagan holiday with evil origins. Some Christian parents ignore it, and some let their kids go out trick-or-treating hoping they won’t run into anyone from church. The authors found out that Halloween was to commemorate Christian martyrs. They suggest that you may turn a “Fear Not Party” to outreach ideas for sharing God’s love with your neighbours.

How are we going to handle Halloween this year?

Halloween can become more than a holiday when we focus on celebrating the truth, communicating the message and commemorating the people. Parents are responsible to guide our children to prepare for challenges in their faith. After all, even though Halloween has pagan origins, your kids may still go door to door and have fun.

Philip Yancey (1990): Where is God when it hurts (part 2)

When we are in pain, it may seem impossible to imagine that good can come from tragedy. We never know in advance exactly how suffering can be transformed into a cause for celebration. But that is what we are asked to believe. God want us to trust him, even in our difficult time.

Is God loves you, even in the middle of your pain?

Yes, God is always there when we hurt. Suffering is a tool that God uses it to develop our character. From this prospect, God cares our respond to the suffering more than provides the answer as why of the suffering.

梁家麟 (--): 追求成長

Gordon D. Fee & Douglas Stuart (1993): How to Read the Bible for All Its Worth

To interpret the Bible and apply what it teaches correctly, solid exegesis (learning the original intent and context of the book) is necessary and should be the first step of interpretation.

Can we do good exegesis?  How?

Observe the historical context: read the passage to identify who the readers are, and their culture, problems and concerns.

·         Observe the literal context: what points the author intended to make based on how he organized ideas, sentences and keywords

·         Understand the content: grammar, meaning of original words, idioms

·         Use good tools: good translations Bible handbook, dictionaries, commentaries
